Family Christmas Party A Huge Success
Thank you to all who supported the Family Christmas Party on Saturday, 12 December 2009. It was a great night of fun, music and relaxation before we break for the holidays.
The Jumping Castle and Rock 'em & Sock 'em rides were flat out all night with kids of all ages obviously compensating for the fact that Baseball and Softball are non-body-contact sports.
The Home Run Derby for U14, U16 and U18 age divisions were a lot of fun. Thank you Paul Murphy for organising and running this event. Congratulations to the winners of the three divisions of the Home Run Derby:
- U14s - Adam Filipitsch
- U16s - Jake Clinch
- Open Division - James Murphy
The Egg & Spoon races were similarly hotly contested. Our younger players entered into the spirit of the evening competing in over 10 races (until the eggs ran out). The coaches race could have been the forum for a few red cards (cheating) however a blind eye was turned and Phil Ardill took out the Coaches race by a short half-head from Mr D.. John Clinch finished a further length and a half back. Unfortunately, he was disqualified as he arrived at the finish line mysteriously with an egg but no spoon (even the most sight impaired umpire couldn't ignore that infraction). Some of our more senior players showed their 'soft handed skill' during an egg tossing contest. Jake Clinch and Nick Spence being the ultimate winners to cries of 'go long, go long!'.
Thank you to Henri De Gorter for supplying and setting up the audio system for the evening.
Santa Claus arriving on his Harley Davidson was a huge hit with young and old alike. Sandra Buck was the raffle winner and enjoyed a 20 minute ride on the back of Santa's bike.
The food provided for the evening was absolutely scrumptious, with any number of people commenting how good it was. Many thanks to Jo Warner for pulling the food together, and to the many volunteers who gave up some of their evening to jump on the BBQ or in the Canteen to make the whole evening work. A special thank you to Julie Simpson for her support from 3pm until lights out and to Angela Hay and Julie Spence for helping with clean up.
Planning is well under way for December 2010, so stay tuned for details.
Merry Christmas to all Greenway families and friends,
Emma Stevens - Social Co-ordinator
Trivia Night 2009 - A Fierce Battle Waged in Togas
The Giants Annual Trivia Night was held on the evening of Saturday 14th November at the Cherrybrook Tech School Hall. Apart from being a great night in which everyone had a lot of fun, the event demonstrated that the spirit of competitiveness at Greenway is not restricted to the Softball and Baseball diamonds!
The defending champions, the Tiger Cubs, put up a strong showing throughout the evening, being consistently among the leaders. Indeed, it was very difficult to see if any team would seriously challenge the champs, as the lead changed with dizzying regularity as teams played their double points wild card in different rounds.
The Coven and the GnT's were ultimately the two teams that duked it out for first place, both making late runs in the last two rounds. At the end of the evening, however, it was the GnT's who prevailed by just half a point - how close is that! Congratulations to the GnT's - we hope your success sparks renewed success on the diamonds in weeks to come.
Many thanks to Henri, Lesley and Nick de Gorter, and Leo Gyzen for running such a great evening, and for the amazing group of ladies who pulled the evening together - Emma Stevens, Jo Warner, Theresa Thompson, Cathy Sheppard and Angela Hay.
